Traditional X-Mas symbols in our parts include the Christmas tree, baby Jesus, carols and time to pause and reflect. And believe it or not, this time, our thematic event KILLER X-MAS is in accord with our 12th offering (ok, somewhat, as there is a black metal past to this acquisition). The act in question is SÓLSTAFIR, who can take you on a still somewhat different X-Mas vibe.
Iceland’s own SÓLSTAFIR are not like any other band. Just consider their evolution – true black metal in early days, post-rock, post-metal, strong ambience, strings, piano and clean vocals today. A combination as impressive as the landscape of their homeland. If you are looking for a band that follows its own path regardless of trends or public opinion, SÓLSTAFIR are your prime example. There is no surprise that many of their early fans did not take well the stylistic shift, but the band adheres to its vision nonetheless, exploring new horizons, delving into ever greater atmosphere, and opening up to new audience with each release. However, this is not some move towards mainstream. Their music is complex and, in its serenity, hides more than meets the eye. Completing the picture is their mother’s tongue, in which the songs are presented. Now, SÓLSTAFIR added another milestone – their sixth full-length “Berdreyminn” – which is the subject of our offering in a truly unique edition…
First, shortly about the album. Translated as “dreamer of forthcoming events”, the piece continues with the exceptional combination of captivating melodies, psychedelic phases, rock and hard rock elements with echoes of metal past. And above arch the vocals of Aðalbjörn Tryggvason, an instrument of itself, that traverse the songs with subtlety yet insistence. In the end however, it does not really matter how you classify this piece or what influences you can detect in it. The core of the matter is elsewhere – in the emotions that “Berdreyminn” conjures, be it melancholy, desire, anger, joy or pain. See what you feel.
Now to the format. Simply put, it is a monster – in the most positive sense of course. A wooden box with engraved band logo contains a digibook with a bonus CD, 44-page booklet and alternative cover, a double 12” LP with a 7” bonus LP, an exclusive stamped and numbered art print on luxurious paper, and finally a compass in a leather pouch.
This edition was released only in 500 pieces, so the added value here is the feeling of being one of its few owners.
